KUBO-Windset Farms partnership paves the way for sustainable greenhouse expansion
KUBO Greenhouse Projects completed a new 24-acre greenhouse facility for Windset Farms, located in Delta, BC. Windset Farms is one of North America's largest vertically integrated producers and marketers of greenhouse-grown produce, selling and marketing over 2,500 acres of greenhouse vegetable production.
Following the build one of the largest operating greenhouses in the United States located in Santa Maria, CA, Windset Farms elected to work with KUBO for its new Delta facility. The greenhouse is one of the largest LED lit facilities in British Columbia.
Utilizing sustainable initiatives, including renewable hydroelectric power and biomass boilers, Windset Farms will produce high-quality tomatoes and cucumbers year round for western Canada, the U.S. and Asian markets. This marks a significant milestone in both companies' commitment to sustainable agriculture. Focusing on innovation to maximize quality and taste, Windset will be ready to meet the increasing demand for year-round locally grown produce.
With a philosophy rooted in sustainability, KUBO's mission is to empower entrepreneurs worldwide to produce for their local markets by utilizing regular and semi-closed greenhouses. By fostering energy and water savings, reducing CO2 emissions, ensuring food safety and enhancing yields of superior quality, the future of greenhouses as envisioned by KUBO is blue.
KUBO previously worked with Windset Farms on the company's Santa Maria facility, constructing the largest single-site vegetable greenhouse operation in the United States and the world's largest Ultra-Clima greenhouse. The Ultra-Clima is a groundbreaking innovation, exemplifying KUBO's dedication to improved production, maximum food safety, minimum energy and water consumption, and reduced CO2 emissions. The Ultra-Clima, in combination with Santa Maria's unique growing climate, allows Windset Farms to achieve record breaking yields for sustainable non-lit cultivation.
"It's been a great honor to work with Windset Farms again, already setting new records in the industry," said Wouter Kuiper, CEO of KUBO Greenhouse Projects. "Thanks to Windset Farms' exemplary construction team, the entire 24-acre greenhouse structure in Delta, from foundation to roof glazing, was completed in a record 80 days! We look forward to seeing Windset Farms continue leading the greenhouse grown sector."
With a vision to provide sustainably grown produce for its target markets, Windset Farms enlisted KUBO's expertise in contracting, engineering, manufacturing and construction of the new facility in Delta, BC. Sustainability is at the forefront of the new build. Dual climate curtains, Ventilation Jet fans and dimmable LED light fixtures will be pivotal in controlling and reducing energy usage. Thermal screens and full light abatement curtains on the roof and side walls will eliminate light pollution. Reverse osmosis and ozone systems are also used for water recirculation.
The first planting of the new greenhouse is scheduled for spring 2024. Consumers will be able to enjoy year round local produce. The strategic locations of Windset's production and distribution facilities ensures accessibility to over 125 million consumers within a 24-hour drive.
"In 2024, our Delta greenhouse facility will become the largest lit greenhouse vegetable facility in western North America, utilizing renewable hydroelectric power and biomass boilers," said Steven Newell, CEO of Windset Farms. "KUBO's expertise and unwavering commitment to sustainable cultivation have allowed this goal to become a reality. We're proud to have them as key supply partners on this groundbreaking expansion."
The KUBO and Windset Farms partnership embodies a shared commitment to shaping the future of sustainable agriculture. The companies said they strive to set new standards for responsible and innovative greenhouse farming.
