Children's reading activity results in joyful family day for employees of Alexandra Farms
Early this year, the Alexandra Farms human resources team held a reading initiative for the children of their farmworkers to encourage reading, creativity and critical thinking skills. Through this effort, the team hoped to play a role in making reading more engaging and accessible for children and families in the rural town of Gachancipá, where the farm is located.
The farm purchased 50 copies of the children’s book “Los Cuentos de la Tortuga Felicia” by J. Ospina. It’s a Colombian children’s book of short fables about equality, kindness and community in the animal world, all told through the wise ways of Felicia the Turtle. Workers with elementary school-aged children were given a copy of the book and instructions to follow once they had finished it. The children were asked to create a comic strip about either their favorite part of the book or a new scenario for the characters to navigate through, exploring the themes they liked best about the stories.
Judging by the entries, it was evident that a lot of thought and effort went into the comic strips. This exercise allowed the children to work on their reading, thinking and creativity skills. The award for each child who submitted a comic strip was a trip to the local movie theater, tickets to an animated film, and a meal for them and their family. Eight winners got to enjoy a ride to the local cinema with their parents.
Alexandra Farms is committed to creating various programs and initiatives that ensure the well-being, personal growth and development of not only our employees but also their families. The hope is that these efforts will make their lives more fulfilling and enable them to find better education and work opportunities in the future.
