FirstFruits Marketing donates 200,000 pounds of apples to food banks
FirstFruits Marketing of Washington ended its fourth annual Take a Bite Out of Hunger program at select retailers with a collective donation of 200,000 pounds of apples to local food banks. This brings the total program donation to just under 1 million pounds over four seasons.
FirstFruits Marketing created Take a Bite Out of Hunger to help feed the underserved while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States. In its fourth year, FirstFruits Marketing continues to partner with retailers to make fresh apple donations in a retailer's name to local food banks, with the retailer contributing the cost of freight. This year’s participating retailers include Ahold, A&P, Grocery Outlet, Harveys, Dave’s Marketplace and United Supermarkets, with support from C&S Wholesale Grocers.
“We appreciate the continuous support and dedication from our retail partners,” Keith Mathews, chief executive officer of FirstFruits Marketing of Washington, said in a press release. “Their participation in the Take a Bite Out of Hunger program has helped us raise awareness of the larger issue of hunger, and together we hope to find a solution to food insecurity in the United States.”
"The problem of hunger isn't just about being hungry. It's about food insecurity, or not having regular access to safe, affordable and nutritious foods," the company said in the press release. "As of 2010, 15 percent of all U.S. households were food-insecure; 33 percent of those were children, 96 percent reported that the food they bought just did not last and they did not have money to get more, and 94 percent reported that they could not afford to eat balanced meals."
The Take a Bite Out of Hunger program provided full retail support with campaign-themed polybags and merchandisers, point-of-sale cards and ad slicks. The program will conclude with a local press release to cover the food bank donations in each retailers’ market.
