Over the past two decades, FlowerTrials has evolved from a joint promotion initiative set up by a handful of breeders into a key event within the global horticultural community. No less than 59 companies will be exhibiting this year in week 24 for the 20th anniversary edition.

Dümmen Orange recently promoted Moises Cadenas to general manager of its Red Fox Las Mercedes Farm located in Santa Ana, El Salvador; and hired Walter Cadenas as general manager at its Antigua Flowers Farm located in Alotenango, Guatemala.
 

Watching the Idaho Potato Commission go the extra mile for retailers inspired produce pro Matt Zapczynski to become IPC’s new retail promotion director Northeast/Midwest.

“I’ve always felt that Idaho Potato Commission is a great support system for retailers,” said Zapczynski, who is based in North Carolina. “Whether you needed a promotion put together, or one of the stores had a grand opening or a renovation to celebrate, IPC was always there to step up and do something special.”

As the 2024 California cherry season approaches, industry experts anticipate a strong crop with significant promotional opportunities for retailers. “The 2024 cherry crop will have good volume and plenty of promotional opportunity for retailers to take advantage of this season,” said Brianna Shales, marketing director for Stemilt Growers.

Organic produce origins date back to the 1940s when it was grown on a minimal number of farms. By the 1970s organic items started showing up in natural retail specialty stores. The early 1990s really got the ball rolling when a chemical called Alar entered the farming scene and became an unexpected quandary. Alar was applied to apples by growers in order to help the fruit ripen; then the Environmental Protection Agency discovered that Alar could cause cancer.
