Consalo Family Farms focuses on summer citrus
The summer citrus category is hot and officials at Consalo Family Farms want to make sure they are firmly positioned as a major player in the growing segment.
According to Casey Kio, the Vineland, NJ-based company’s executive vice president-global business, as demand for fresh, flavorful produce continues year-round, the summer citrus category has firmly positioned itself as a vibrant and growing segment in U.S. retail.
Kio said that for Consalo Family Farms, this season marks another exciting chapter as the company expands its imported citrus program — sourcing premium fruit from Uruguay, Argentina, Peru, Chile and South Africa — and continues to build brand awareness through its growing Little Smoochies line.
“Summer citrus sales have shown consistent year-over-year growth, driven by consumer desire for healthy snacking options, immune-supporting vitamin C and convenience,” Kio said. “A successful season for growers and retailers depends on several key factors, including optimal weather conditions in the Southern Hemisphere, reliable logistics and vessel availability, and strong market pricing that balances volume movement with grower returns.
“Transparency, accurate forecasting and solid communication across the supply chain ensure smooth transitions and consistent supply throughout the summer months. For this summer, in particular, fair and equitable tariffs for all countries that supply summer citrus is imperative.”
Kio added that among the citrus offerings, easy-peel mandarins continue to lead the charge in popularity and that’s where Consalo has placed its emphasis. “Our Little Smoochies brand is a standout in this category, delivering kid-friendly packaging, seedless fruit and exceptional sweetness,” she noted. “These attributes make them a preferred choice for lunchboxes, road trips and healthy summer snacks.”
In addition to mandarins, Kio said the summer citrus program includes Navel oranges, lemons, grapefruit and the specialty varieties like Cara Caras and Midknights — each sourced from trusted grower partners across South America and South Africa. “We focus on citrus that delivers consistent flavor and shelf life, knowing that both factors are essential for consumer satisfaction and retailer success,” she said.
Kio added that consumers are more engaged than ever and want fruit that is not only sweet and flavorful but also clean, easy to eat and convenient to grab on the go. She said that mandarins in particular hit all those marks. Packaging also plays a role, especially as more shoppers look for convenience during the summer months.
“Shoppers are also looking for reassurance about where their fruit comes from and how it’s grown,” Kio said. “Brands that can tell a story — like Little Smoochies, backed by a fourth-generation family farm with a global reach, help build trust and drive repeat purchases.”
For retailers, maximizing sales begins with eye-catching displays and prominent placement. Cross-promoting citrus with complementary items like salads, beverages or snacks encourages impulse buys and increased basket size.
Education is also a powerful tool, Kio said. “Highlighting the origin, flavor profile or health benefits through signage, in-store demos or digital content helps engage consumers who are eager to learn more about what they’re buying,” she added.
The farm’s investment in citrus is both strategic and passionate. “We’re growing our summer citrus program steadily, with a commitment to quality sourcing, consistent arrivals and hands-on logistics,” Kio said. “Our vertically integrated approach, from grower relationships to retail partnerships, allows us to adapt quickly to market shifts and maintain the high standards our customers expect.
“Our Little Smoochies brand is a key part of our category-building efforts. With playful branding, high-flavor fruit and strong visual identity, it resonates with both parents and kids, making it easy for retailers to create meaningful connections at shelf level.”
Consalo Family Farms remains focused on delivering freshness, building consumer loyalty, and supporting its retail partners every step of the way. “With strong grower alliances in Uruguay, Argentina, Peru, Chile and South Africa, we’re bringing the best of the Southern Hemisphere to North American shelves and we’re just getting started,” Kio said.
