Hy-Vee and Pazazz apples partner to help kids stay active, eat healthier

Honeybear Brands, a leading grower and developer of premium apple varieties, is partnering with Midwest grocery retailer Hy-Vee to help families improve their health and wellness this winter. Hy-Vee’s KidsFit virtual program that educates parents and children through a free online challenge, e-newsletter and app, will be featured in more than 200 stores January 1-February 29. Honeybear Brands’ premium apple Pazazz™ will support KidsFit with a special apple promotion through February. This is the first fresh produce item to be included in a stand-alone display promoting healthy foods to shoppers under the KidsFit brand.

pazazz“The combination of online learning, decreased activity that comes with cold weather, and shelter in place restrictions due to COVID-19 are taking their toll on families, especially kids. We know physical activity is not only good for the body, but also the mind and mood. Add healthy food choices, like Pazazz apples that help protect your brain, aid weight loss, stimulate good gut bacteria and promote bone health,  and  you have a winning equation,” said Don Roper, vice president of  sales and marketing, Honeybear Brands. “Plus, Pazazz is such a great-tasting apple, parents may find kids becoming apple fans for life.”

A descendant of the beloved Honeycrisp, Pazazz has a flavor all its own with a perfectly balanced sweet and tart flavor profile. This clean and refreshing apple packs a strong crunch and that flavor does not fade as the season progresses, making it a perfect year-round, locally grown variety.

Helping Kids Stay Healthy

Hy-Vee’s KidsFit program includes the KidsFit Club (monthly e-newsletter with monthly challenges to earn rewards), School Wellness Club (reward local schools within a 50-mile radius to a Hy-Vee Store), the 5-Week Challenge (complete with 35 unique daily activities for all age levels, Rookie, Por & All-Star) and KidsFit app (teaches health and wellness habits through mini games and challenges) designed to help families live a healthy life and have fun.

KidsFit features kid-friendly recipes and edible education featuring healthy ingredients like Pazazz apples. Hy-Vee Dietitians are featured in online videos sharing at home message for kids and parents about family meals, hydration, snacks and edible education every week to encourage more conversation about fueling at home.

In February, Hy-Vee is offering a classroom challenge where 100’s of schools will celebrate moving with KidsFit as part of National Heart Health Month. This challenge can be done in-person, hybrid and completely virtual for schools & classrooms.

“Our KidsFit program has become an even more important and a helpful resource for families & schools, given that we now do so much online. We make fitness and creating healthy habits fun with our virtual activities and interactive games,” said Daira Driftmier, director of Hy-Vee KidsFit.  “We’re excited to partner with Honeybear Brands to feature Pazazz apples in our produce section where KidsFit comes to life offline, in store with signage that helps shoppers take advantage of our program and healthy eating tips.”
