Zespri kiwifruit powers up nutrition convention
With celebrated author Steven Pratt on hand to tout the "superfood" qualities of green and gold kiwifruit, the Zespri booth became an energy-boosting destination at the recent American Dietetics Association Food & Nutrition conference and exposition in Honolulu.
Known as Oprah's "Food Dude," the author of SuperFoods Healthstyle signed copies of his book and shared tips on the benefits of eating kiwifruit with over 5,000 members of the association during its annual food and nutrition conference in mid-September.
ADA is America's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. Members include registered dietitians, cafeteria menu planners, nutritionists and other professionals who advise the public about eating right.
"While most people in the audience were familiar with the flavor and nutritional benefits of the green kiwifruit, many were getting their first taste of gold," Karen Brux, general manager of North America for Zespri International, said in a press release. "There was a great deal of interest in the nutritional differences between the two varieties. Many were excited to hear that a serving of gold kiwifruit contains 310 percent of the vitamin C we need each day and were eager to recommend the fruit to their clients and add it to their menus."
Visitors to the Zespri booth also learned more about recent studies connecting kiwifruit with good health. For example, eating two kiwifruits a day may offer the same cardio-protective power as aspirin without the side effects. Also, the phytochemicals in kiwifruit may have cancer-fighting properties. Zespri will continue its outreach to dietitians through an e-zine known as Kiwi E-News and on www.zesprikiwi.com.
While Zespri's New Zealand kiwifruit season will wrap up in the coming weeks, Zespri gold kiwifruit, grown in California, will be available from early November through mid-February.
