Watermelons driving strong business for Midwest Best
Especially in the summertime, watermelons are king for Midwest Best Produce in St. Louis.
This summer is no exception, according to Dan Pupillo, Jr., who owns the company.
On June 18, Pupillo indicated that he was receiving Texas and Georgia watermelons. “Texas will run through August and Georgia will run through the end of July.” Missouri-grown watermelons are to begin about July 1.
Tony Pupillo “The watermelon markets are steady,” Pupillo said. “We have a little volume from Georgia coming on, which will keep the market in a fair area and we can have some decent prices for promotion for July 4 volume. Things are going at a pretty good pace. The heat is coming on and I can see the market staying steady through July.”
Meanwhile, Midwest Best is wholesaling a full line of produce in St. Louis to local foodservice establishments and wholesalers. “The retailers in town are steady all year. It’s not like it’s been over the top but it’s a good steady pace,” Pupillo said.
He emphasized that his firm “is a wholesaler. We get it in and out. We do direct drops.” Midwest Best particularly ships watermelons “all over the country. We do 60 percent of our business out of town.”
Pupillo said, “Our business is growing. We are moving in the right direction and business as a whole is on an upswing every year for us.
“We’re looking at another good season, with good volume, hopefully to run us right into spring. Things are good.”
Pupillo’s daughter, JoAnna Pupillo, has been working in bookkeeping for the business since early this year. “She’ll decide if there’s going to be another family member in the business.”
