Watercress continues to thrive for B&W Quality Growers
B&W Quality Growers, one of the largest and longest-running growers of leafy greens in the world, is enjoying the start of its spring season.
“Demand is steady, with a clear shift toward nutrient-dense greens,” said Anna Klawitter, marketing manager for the Fellsmere, FL-based company. “Watercress continues to stand out as customers look for products that offer both flavor and real nutritional value.”
Florida has been a strong and steady part of the company’s production this season.
“We have seen consistent quality and reliable output, which allows us to support customers without disruption as we move through the spring transition,” Klawitter said. “Watercress is leading the way for us. As more people learn about its nutrient density, demand continues to grow. We are also seeing interest in versatile greens like baby arugula and spinach that can be used across a wide range of dishes. Overall, customers want greens that are easy to use and bring more to the plate.”
Weather is always something B&W monitors closely, and this season did bring a freeze in Florida that created some early challenges for the company.
“Our team moved quickly to manage it and limit any long-term impact,” Klawitter said.
B&W is known for its year-round growing strategy, successfully managing transitions between regions while maintaining consistent quality and supply.
“It comes down to planning ahead and staying closely connected across our teams,” Klawitter said. “With multiple growing regions and full control from growing through packing and shipping, we are able to transition smoothly and keep quality consistent year-round.”
One recent trend is a clear shift toward health-focused choices.
“Consumers are paying more attention to what they are eating, and watercress is gaining traction as one of the most nutrient-dense greens available,” Klawitter said. “That awareness is driving more interest across both retail and foodservice.”
When it comes to packaging and having the product ready, convenience and clarity are key to customers.
“All of our products are triple washed air tunnel dried and ready to eat,” Klawitter said. “We focus on efficiency and strong coordination across our operations. Our vertically integrated model helps us stay in control and respond quickly when issues come up.”
Up ahead, B&W sees strong opportunity, especially as demand for nutrient-dense foods continues to grow.
“Watercress is at the center of that,” Klawitter said. “There is also room to expand how it is used beyond salads, into juices, sandwiches, bowls and other everyday meals. Our focus is on making it more accessible and easier for customers to use.”
