Trader Joe’s opens first Florida store; second store planned for later this year
After months of speculation, the Trader Joe’s chain has finally moved into the Sunshine State, opening its first Florida store in Naples on Feb. 10 and announcing plans for a second location in Sarasota that will open later this year.
Floridians for years have been clamoring for “Two-Buck Chuck,” the chain’s famous $2 Charles Shaw wine, and Trader Joe’s raft of specialty items and delicacies.
After expanding into the Southeast from its Monrovia, CA, headquarters a few years ago, Trader Joe’s was thought to be making plans to move into Florida prior to the recent recession.
The Naples location opened to great acclaim Feb. 10, drawing enthusiastic crowds. No date has been set for the opening of the Sarasota location, but a Trader Joe’s spokesperson confirmed the company has signed a lease on a 17,500-square-foot building with plans to begin operating this year.
The privately owned chain operates 365 stores in 32 states. It is owned by a family trust established by late German grocery mogul, Theo Albrecht, which also operates more than 1,100 Aldi stores in the United States.
The first Trader Joe’s opened in 1967, an outgrowth of the Pronto Market convenience store chain that began operating around Los Angeles in 1958.
Supermarket News estimates Trader Joe’s sales last year topped $8.5 billion.
