Sy Katz expanding acreage on all commodities in Georgia
“The gist of our business is simple,” said Owen Margolis, sales representative for Sy Katz Produce Inc. in Pompano Beach, FL. “We work with our growing partners year round and we have a strong supply chain from the Caribbean and from Mexico through Nogales.
“We follow the domestic seasons from Florida northward, and in the fall we work our way back south,” he added.
Sy Katz handles sales for Juniper Produce in Quincy, FL, Full House Farms in Clinton, NC, and Deep South Farms and Walt Carter Farms, which are both located in Lake Park, GA.
Margolis announced that his son, 26 year-old Jake Margolis, joined the company last January, and that he is doing a great job for the firm. The younger Margolis is working with the sales team, which, besides his father, includes Frank Ay and Cal McLachlan.
Sy Katz handles all staple commodity items, including cucumbers, eggplant, squashes, variety and specialty peppers, tomatoes and other mixed vegetables.
“Specialty peppers continue to grow in demand, especially in certain demographic regions,” said Margolis. “Even Americans are buying them regularly today.”
The company is expanding its acreage on the peppers, along with all of the other products it produces in its Georgia deal.
“We offer all kinds of packing options for our customers, who are retailers, wholesalers and foodservice operators across the country and into Canada,” said Margolis.
In early November, the company was harvesting in Lake Park, GA, and things were starting to move in some Florida locations.
“We are now operating out of a new and bigger food safety-compliant facility in Lake Park, Georgia,” said Margolis. “We started using it in the spring. We are very pleased with the performance there. It has enhanced our deal there and it is providing all of the safety compliancy needed.”
