Sun World Chile opens in Santiago
After years of importing fruit from and introducing its new fruit varieties to Chile, Sun World International LLC in Bakersfield, CA, has established an operation in the capital of Chile.
Sun World Chile, based in Santiago, is managed by long-time Chilean fruit industry veteran Rafael Parada, who coordinates all of Sun World's fruit exports to North America as well as its variety development and licensing programs, according to Sun World Senior Vice Presidents David Marguleas and Dirk Winkelmann.
The new South American presence underscores Sun World's commitment to actively managing and commercializing its new seedless grape and stone fruit licensing activity in Chile and supports its new relationships with 10 Chilean fruit exporters.
The Chilean office is Sun World's fifth international operation. Sun World Mexico was established in the early 1990s, Sun World South Africa was initiated in early 2001, Sun World Australasia was launched in 2002 and Sun World Europe was initiated in 2006.
"Chile produces exceptional fruit and exports much of its production to the United States, making Sun World a logical North American distributor for many Chilean producers and exporters," Mr. Winkelmann said in a press release, adding that the company is importing fruit from among Chile's more important export companies such as Dole Chile, Subsole, Frutera Santa Maria, Corpora, Gesex, Copefrut and Compa?ia Frutera del Norte.
"Chile is also well suited to produce new seedless grapes as well as improved varieties of plums, apricots and peaches developed by Sun World in its California-based breeding program," Mr. Marguleas added in the press release.
Mr. Marguleas said that Sun World has introduced dozens of new varieties under license to Chilean nurseries, growers and exporters.
Mr. Parada, who is responsible for all aspects of Sun World's Chilean operations, joined the company at the start of the current fruit season. A trained agronomist with a degree from Chile's Santiago Catholic University, he has previously served in various commercial and technical positions for Chiquita, Safex, PQA and Dole.
A native of Chile, Mr. Parada resides in Santiago with his wife, Macarena, and sons, Martin and Tom?s.
