Spongebob Squarepants Spinach joins lineup at Boskovich Farms
Spongebob Squarepants, the beloved cartoon character, will soon appear on retail packages of Boskovich Farms spinach as "Spongebob Squarepants Spinach."
On license from Nickelodeon, Spongebob is set to make his debut during the second week of August, with rollouts in California, Dallas/Ft. Worth and Chicago markets.
The Oxnard, CA-based grower-shipper-processor of premium quality produce items is primarily targeting parents who are looking for easy ways to offer their children more nutritious foods.
"Getting children to eat healthier has always been a struggle for parents. Spongebob, one of the most recognizable and adored characters, is in touch with youth culture today. Partnering him with one of the healthiest vegetables in the supermarket will definitely appeal to both kids and their parents, stated Don Hobson, vice president of sales and marketing for Boskovich Farms.
The Spongebob Squarepants show is the No. 1 rated television show for children ages two to 11 and is also highly rated for pre-teens and teenagers. It airs 21 times per week and has almost 56 million monthly viewers. Spongebob's appeal is not just with kids, however. Fully 25 percent of viewership of the television show is adults, and 30 percent of Spongebob licensed purchases are made by adults for themselves or other adults.
The Spongebob Squarepants Spinach packages will feature fun graphics, healthy "Nicktrition tips and kid-friendly recipe ideas. For additional kid appeal, temporary tattoos of Spongebob and his seaworthy friends will also be included in each package. There are four different designs of the tattoos which will be randomly inserted into the packages.
"This is an excellent opportunity for Boskovich Farms, Nickelodeon and our retail partners to address the childhood obesity epidemic by offering healthy products such as Spongebob Spinach, added Mr. Hobson. "Spinach is one of the healthiest vegetables in the produce department, containing high amounts of vitamins A and C, iron, folate and magnesium. It is a good source of fiber and is high in lutein, which is important for eye health. Additionally, it is fat free, cholesterol free and low in calories.
Spongebob Squarepants Spinach is available for retailers in both a 10-ounce size and a 12-ounce size, which also features a microwave-in-bag benefit. Depending on the success of the spinach program, Boskovich Farms is considering adding other items in the salad category under the "Spongebob label.
