During this time of year and four the next four to five months, Yuma is also a hotbed of vegetable production. “It’s all about helping to reduce distribution center costs,” said John Chamberlain, vice president of marketing for the citrus-centric firm.
He explained that many retailers are loading trucks on a daily basis in the Yuma area during the fall and winter months. Lemons, of course, are also a produce department staple. Chamberlain said it makes great sense to combine a load and reduce the hours of transit time, as well as overall transportation costs for the receiver. Without the potential pickup in Yuma, a truck might have to run deep into California to pick up lemons before turning around and heading back East.
