Snow & Sons set for good asparagus season
The asparagus harvest is currently under way at Snow & Sons Co. “We are getting a normal start, and the cold early weather hasn’t been much of a problem so far,” President Steve Thomas told The Produce News.
Snow & Sons clips asparagus on approximately 400 acres in Outlook, WA. “Most growers started cutting by [April 9], with early areas beating that by a week,” he continued. “Most growers have found enough labor to get it cut, but there are still some shortages.” Thomas said cutters worked long hours in the early days of the season until adequate labor came on board.
Although the area was behind in annual snowpack as the harvest ramped up, Thomas said late rain and mountain snows mean irrigators can expect to get full water delivery.
The company markets asparagus under the “Snowflight” label, sold in 28-pound wood and 11-pound wood or plastic crates. The company’s customers are located on the West Coast, Midwest and Canada. Snow & Sons is able to move product to the East Coast “when the market allows,” Thomas added.
“We’re looking forward to a good season,” he commented.
