SnapDragon apples arrive just in time for fall
Apples are synonymous with fall and this year shoppers will not be disappointed when they find the newest New York apple variety, SnapDragon, available at retailers throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions starting in October.
SnapDragon apples are bred exclusively in New York state and known for their crispy texture, juiciness and extra sweet flavor courtesy of their parent, the popular Honeycrisp.
Known for their “monster crunch,” SnapDragon will be available as loose stickered apples or in two-pound bags. Many retailers will offer special in-store demo tastings and signage to encourage shoppers to try this exciting new variety. It’s possible that shoppers might even have a chance to meet some of the apple growers that bring these delicious apples to market during in-store samplings.
“Apples continue to be one of the most popular fruits — due in part to new varieties that offer shoppers choices,” Mark Russell, an apple grower and marketing committee chair for Crunch Time Apple Growers, said in a press release.
SnapDragon apples will launch in store in in early October and will be available for eight to 12 weeks — or while supplies last. This variety is also available at member farm markets throughout New York state.
Developed by Cornell University, SnapDragon apples are a naturally selected and bred apple variety developed through traditional breeding practices. These apples, along with the new RubyFrost variety, are grown exclusively in New York state by Crunch Time Apple Growers, which supports Cornell’s continued apple-breeding program.
Formed in 2010, Crunch Time Apple Growers is a grower-owned company united with the mission of introducing exclusive, premium flavor apples to the marketplace. The organization comprises 145 grower members in the state of New York, representing about 60 percent of the state’s apple production.
