CHICAGO - AgroFresh announced May 1 that SmartFresh is now available for fresh bananas.
SmartFresh quality bananas maintain their bright yellow color and fresh pulp longer before developing brown spots, according to the company. Retailers are able to merchandise at a higher color stage than previously possible, and gain a minimum of two additional selling days with SmartFresh quality bananas without increasing shrink.
"Recent studies have shown excellent results on banana quality, color and shrink," Raphael Crawford, vice president of North America for AgroFresh, said in a May 1 statement. The SmartFresh quality bananas continue to keep their bright yellow color and fresh pulp for extra days after they're purchased, providing consumers with higher quality fruit and a better eating experience.
In addition to extending banana color, SmartFresh reduces shrink, which is important for both retailers and consumers. In a recent consumer study conducted in March, consumers dissatisfied with bananas pointed to shelf life as their primary complaint, according to the AgroFresh statement. Additionally, 71 percent of those consumers complained that they threw away about one-quarter of the bananas they purchased on a regular basis.
Banana quality proved to be extremely important to these consumers as they ranked ripeness and color well ahead of other banana purchase factors such as price and brand.
With SmartFresh for bananas, we enable retailers to increase customer satisfaction by providing consumers with brighter, longer-lasting bananas and the possibility of increasing sales in their banana category, said Mr. Crawford. We found that this is consistent with the positive results we have seen in tomatoes, melons and avocados during our commercial rollout in 2005 and are excited to see the impact SmartFresh is having on both customer and consumer satisfaction.
