Scotia Horticultural Congress 2014 Convention grows 10 percent from last year
Horticulture Nova Scotia held its Scotia Horticultural Congress 2014 convention on Jan. 27-28 in Greenwich, Nova Scotia. The successful event grew 10 percent from last year, attracting 258 delegates and over 45 booths at the tradeshow, which sold out early for space.
“This congress was one of the most successful to date — a great turnout, with amazing and very informative speakers. Our trade show was exceptional, with some new entrants complementing those who participate each year,” said Marlene Huntley, executive director of the association.
The convention focuses on Nova Scotia berry and vegetable industries and is the largest in Maritime Canada. This year’s theme was “Future Food, Future Farming,” and the event featured speakers both at plenary sessions of general interest and concurrent sessions on crop specific subjects. The topics focused on the direction of the berry and vegetable industry over the next few years.
The guest speaker at the annual awards banquet was Jamie Reaume, executive director of Holland Marsh Growers Association.
Leonard North of Valley Mushrooms was named Innovator of the Year. Donna Crawford, former administrative coordinator at Horticulture Nova Scotia, was awarded a Lifetime Membership.
The banquet agenda also included the launch of a new video from Horticulture Nova Scotia. The video promotes the personal, economic and environmental health benefits of buying Nova Scotia grown produce.
“Our video is meant to be an entertaining and educational view of the importance of eating locally-grown berries and vegetables, targeted to all ages of consumers. Launched through YouTube and posted on our homepage, the video will be played during presentations and wherever we display,” said Huntley.
Plans for next year’s convention are already in progress. Interested people should mark their calendar for Jan. 26-27, 2015.
