PMA creates scholarship honoring Joe Nucci
The Produce Marketing Association's new chairman of the board, Janet Erickson, announced the creation of the Nucci Scholarship for Culinary Innovation during the closing general session of PMA's 2005 Fresh Summit International Convention & Exposition in Atlanta.
The scholarship honors Joe Nucci and his significant contributions to produce innovation in foodservice. Mr. Nucci, who died in July, was the president of Mann Packing Co. in Salinas, CA. He would have become PMA's chairman-elect at the convention.
In addition to his role on the PMA board, Mr. Nucci served on the foodservice board of directors. He also served with United Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association, Produce for Better Health Foundation and the International Fresh-cut Produce Association.
In a statement explaining the scholarship's creation, Ms. Erickson said, "Joe Nucci believed deeply in our industry and its future. His life was also defined by his innovative spirit and the belief that the next great idea was just around the corner. This scholarship will be used to inspire our next generation of leaders."
PMA President Bryan Silbermann added, "It is our intention that this [scholarship] reflect Joe Nucci's passion, commitment and integrity. It is fitting that this scholarship will provide opportunities for leading culinary students and faculty to form close ties to the produce industry and advance the inclusion of produce on foodservice menus."
Mr. Nucci's family members -- Debbie Nucci, his wife; Don Nucci, his father; Matthew Nucci and Michael Nucci, his sons; and Lorri Koster, Gina Nucci and Dee Dee Reyna, his sisters -- were presented with a copy of the board resolution that created the scholarship.
The Culinary Institute of America, with campuses in Hyde Park, NY, and St. Helena, CA, is the first recipient of the Nucci Scholarship for Culinary Innovation.
Greg Fatigatti, chief and associate dean of CIA, also was on hand to receive a copy of the resolution.
The scholarship will be funded by the proceeds of the PMA Foodservice Conference golf tournament, which has been renamed the Nucci Scholarship Golf Tournament. Individual donations will also be accepted.
