OGVG appoints Evan Smith as sustainable infrastructure development lead
Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers announced the appointment of Evan Smith as its sustainable infrastructure development lead, effective immediately.
Smith brings academic training and policy experience to the role. He holds a master’s degree in international public policy from the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he participated in the Global Political Economy and STEM for Global Resilience research clusters. He earned an honors bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of New Brunswick.
During a graduate fellowship at the Balsillie School, Smith collaborated on research examining critical minerals from Canadian government and business perspectives and co-authored a policy brief submitted to Global Affairs Canada. His work included consultations with federal, provincial and international governments.
Smith previously served as a program and policy assistant with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, where he supported the rollout of the automated license plate renewal program and contributed to the development of fraud policies and procedures. He also led a research team at the New Brunswick Research Institute for Research, Data and Training, focusing on housing policy, and authored reports on equity and inclusion in Canadian universities for the Green Caucus of New Brunswick.
In his new role, Smith will lead OGVG’s sustainable infrastructure initiatives, supporting the greenhouse vegetable sector in advancing energy efficiency, environmental stewardship and long-term competitiveness.
“Evan’s appointment reflects OGVG’s commitment to building a future-ready sector that balances innovation, sustainability and competitiveness,” said Richard Lee, executive director of Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers. “His background in public policy and infrastructure strategy will help us navigate emerging challenges while advancing leadership in sustainable agriculture.”
