Pacific Sun prides itself on offering problem-solving services
For Ray Davis, owner of Pacific Sun Distributing Inc., based in Los Angeles, it’s all about “fixing things.”
The longtime distributor calls himself a “problem solver,” adding “we do it quite well. I have a solid staff that gets the job done.”
With no hint of a regret, Davis said he makes less money than many in the business, but his method of operation is to “do everything honestly” and take the extra step. His goal is to help his clients even if that does not mean lining his pockets with gold. Recently, he helped an industry colleague who was doing a London show get a load of produce there in great condition and on time. Davis is an expert in international shipments and knew well the ropes of getting an air container of produce across the ocean. This knowledge fell outside the realm of this particular produce firm. “Afterwards, she asked me to quote on some grapes. But she already works with a good shipper and I told her she should continue going direct. Sure I’d like the business, but that’s not what’s best for her. I have enough experience in this business and I don’t mind advising others when I can help.”
Pacific Sun Sales representatives Edna Dollarhide and Bob Drake with Office Manager Michelle Monts and Bookeeper Cathy Guttirez.Davis founded his company almost two decades ago after a similar time working his way up through the ranks with other Los Angeles-based produce distributors. He takes great pride in proving an earlier naysayer wrong. When he first opened his doors, an industry guy touring the market with a local association executive “told me I’d never make it. I’m still paying my bills and doing alright.”
Located a few miles away from downtown Los Angeles, Pacific Sun specializes in finding the right product mix for its many customers. It ships all over the world including throughout the United States, Hawaii, the Middle East and Europe. “We ship everything from A to Z,” he said. “Grapes, flower (cauliflower), broccoli, asparagus, sweet corn, Medjool dates to the Middle East… even though they grow them there. We have a good chili pepper program.”
With a bit of modesty, Davis said, “I’ve been a lucky guy. I’ve had a lot of good business land in my lap.”
But in the next breath, he talks about his “passion for the business” and that he handles every sale “with integrity.” He said the company does its due diligence with every load and “put their eyes” on everything they sell. This passion, integrity and due diligence probably has as much to do with his success as the role “luck” played.
The Pacific Sun sales team of veterans include Davis, John Florance and Bob Drake. “And I just hired Edna Dollarhide, who is doing a lot of herb sales all over the United States.”
