Tottori 20th Century pears from Japan are the latest item to be packed exclusively under the "Oppenheimer" brand.
The sweet, yellow-skinned pears are one of the more unusual items in the Vancouver, BC-based marketer's pipfruit repertoire. Grown with exacting care by growers in Japan's Tottori prefecture, the quality of these pears make them a perfect fit for the "Oppenheimer" brand, according to John Anderson, chairman, president and CEO of Oppenheimer.
"This is the first year that 100 percent of the Tottori pears available in North America will be marketed in the Oppenheimer box," he said. "Through our relationship with growers in Japan, we have gained enormous appreciation for the effort that goes into producing this fruit. We feel honored to market pears of this quality in our branded box."
Each pear blossom is hand-pollinated and when it begins to mature, it is covered with a waxed paper bag to protect its tender skin from disease, harsh weather and pests. A second bag is often added as the fruit outgrows the original one. When harvested and packed, Tottori pears are placed in soft mesh socks to protect them during the journey to global markets. The result is a pear with a smooth, clear skin and delicate sweet flavor.
Tottori pears are available in two-layer, 10-kilogram cartons in sizes 1L (34-36 count), 2L (30-32 count), 3L (26-28 count) and 4L (22-24 count). Volumes can be purchased in the United States now, and Oppenheimer anticipates the fruit will be available in Canada by the end of October.
Oppenheimer will be offering samples of Tottori pears at its booth (No. 1423) during the PMA convention in Atlanta.
