From Georgia to Peru: The sweetness continues with Bland Farms’ premium sweet onions
As summer winds down and the Vidalia season enters its final stretch, retailers might wonder: What’s next for sweet onions?
For Bland Farms, the answer is simple — Premium Sweet Onions from Peru.
With Vidalias available through September, now is the perfect time for retailers to prepare for a seamless transition into the fall season. That’s where Bland Farms’ decades-long investment in Peru steps in, ensuring a consistent supply of the same sweet, mild flavor consumers crave — year-round.
28 Years of Growing in Peru
Bland Farms isn’t new to Peru. In fact, the company has been cultivating sweet onions there for 28 years. Unlike many other producers, Bland Farms doesn’t just contract fields overseas; they operate them. From the soil to the shipping docks, Bland Farms grows its own onions, manages its own employees, and oversees every step of production.
“We have our boots, our hands, and our people on the ground,” said Troy Bland, CEO of Bland Farms. “That level of control and oversight gives retailers confidence. We know the quality. We know the conditions. And we know we can deliver.”
Why Peru?
The Peruvian coast offers some of the most ideal growing conditions in the world for sweet onions. The region’s dry climate—with minimal rainfall and plentiful sunshine—eliminates many of the disease pressures growers face in wetter climates like Georgia. This allows Bland Farms’ agronomy team to fine-tune irrigation using drip systems and focus on quality, rather than battling the elements.
“In Georgia, we get more than 60 inches of rain a year, and that can create challenges with fungus and bacteria,” Bland explained. “In Peru, we can spoon-feed the onions exactly what they need. It’s a game-changer for consistency and quality.”
The Same Variety You Know and Love
Peru is home to the same seed variety grown in the Vidalia region. The result? A nearly indistinguishable flavor profile.
“If you bite into a Peru onion and a Vidalia onion, you can hardly tell the difference,” said Bland. “They’re the two sweetest onions in the world.”
Built for Retailers
Bland Farms’ Premium Sweet Onions from Peru are available in a wide range of pack sizes—including 2-, 3-, 5-, 6-, and 10-pound consumer bags, as well as traditional 40- pound shippers. Organic Premium Sweets are also available, offering flexibility for stores of all formats.
“Our goal is to make it easy for retailers to keep their sweet onion displays full and profitable,” said Sloan Lott, director of sales. “This year’s crop looks excellent, and our supply is steady.”
What Sets Bland Farms Apart
As the first to nationally market Vidalia Sweet Onions back in 1983, Bland Farms has built its name on innovation and integrity. From pioneering PLU stickers on Vidalias to leading the way in year-round sweet onion programs, the company has never stopped evolving.
Today, Bland Farms grows and contracts over 3,000 acres domestically and another 1,000 in Peru—an unmatched scale supported by long-standing partnerships and family leadership.
“Troy, Delbert, and Omar are in those fields,” said Lott. “Not just during harvest, but throughout the year. We’re not absentee growers. We live it, every day.”
A Sweet Transition
With Vidalia Sweet Onions still in supply through September, now is the perfect time for retailers to plan their fall sets and lean into the consistency of Bland Farms’ Premium Sweet Onion program.
“Sweet onions aren’t just a seasonal item anymore,” said Lott. “They’re a year-round staple—and we’re proud to deliver them with the same quality and care our customers expect from us.”
