October offers more than just football
October offers more than just football
It’s official — autumn is here, yet that is only a meteorological phenomenon. As the harvest moon wanes, and the leaves continue changing colors, millions enter into the addictive season of football. Watching the clash of gridiron titans is ubiquitous this time of year. From high schools to colleges to the NFL, competitive games are being played seemingly every day of the week to the delight of enthusiastic fans.
But October is also a very active month for the floral industry. It’s Fair Trade Awareness Month, so we explain what that means for flower workers and consumers; it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Cindy Hanauer gives us insight into the importance of strength in numbers; Sue DeMuth proposes that Dia de los Muertos is this month’s untapped floral holiday; and there are also several important trade fairs and conferences. The first big show was Agriflor in Quito, Ecuador, and we plan to recap that next month, along with on-the-scene coverage of the PMA Fresh Summit Expo in Anaheim, CA. The Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers Conference & Trade Show convenes in Delaware, and finally, the WF&SFA Floral Distribution Conference meets in Miami. That adds up to some considerable October
globetrotting and floral frequent flyer miles.
In this Floral Marketing edition we also feature the bright and cheerful sunflower. Ornamental sunflowers represent a significant volume of floral sales to consumers and through the perspectives and observations of industry experts we hope to give you a newfound appreciation for one of the happiest of flowers.
See you next month.
