Newman's Own Organics launches potato line
Aptos, CA-based Newman's Own Organics Fresh Produce is expanding its line to include potatoes.
The Newman's Own Organics potato line will include organic Russet potatoes in five-pound bags and loose in 50-pound cartons, as well as organic red potatoes in five-pound bags and loose in 50-pound cartons.
The five-pound potato bags will resemble all of the fresh produce packaging with the photo of an American Gothic "Pa" Newman and daughter Nell, along with the USDA's organic seal.
Previously, Newman's Own Organics sold organic potatoes under the "Tomorrow's Organics label, but that label likely will be replaced entirely by the "Newman's Own Organics label, said Chris Lemmon, organic sales manager for Newman's Own Organics. In addition to greater name recognition, the "Newman's Own Organics, label brings with it the aspect of charitable contributions the Newman's companies are known for, Mr. Lemmon said.
"Most customers carrying our salads will carry potatoes, Mr. Lemmon said. "We have a captive audience. Even customers not currently on our salad program are showing interest.
The new organic red and Russet potatoes will be available year-round from California or Colorado. The new-crop potatoes will start being shipped from California in the middle of May and will continue to come from California until late August, when Newman's Own Organics will start packing potatoes in Colorado in order to maintain quality and supply. Mr. Lemmon said that the potatoes would be shipped from the Yuma, AZ, or Salinas, CA area, depending on where the salads are loading.
"Newman's Own Organics salads, Romaine hearts and carrots are just the beginning of our growing line, said Nell Newman, co-founder and president of Newman's Own Organics. "We always try to give our customers what they want, whether it is cookies or carrots, which is why we have decided to expand our fresh produce line to include potatoes.
Ms. Newman said the company has joined the largest and fastest-growing segment of the organic food market and wants to continue to help the category grow. "Lettuce and potatoes are the most popular vegetables in the United States, Ms. Newman said. "Now we can offer our customers both of the vegetables they enjoy most.
Newman's Own Organics Fresh Produce currently offers 22 retail items, including the new organic red and Russet potatoes, and intends to add 10 new items by the end of the year.
Newman's Own Organics was established as a division of Newman's Own in 1993 and became a separate company in late 2001. Paul Newman, founder of Newman's Own in 1982, gives away all his royalties after taxes from Newman's Own Organics to educational and charitable organizations. Since 1982 he has given over $175 million to thousands of charities worldwide.
