Mission Ranches and McKinsey Farms combine operations
Mission Ranches Co. LLC and Sam McKinsey Farms LLC, two long-standing farming companies on California's Central Coast, are combining operations in order to meet growing consumer demand and pursue new market opportunities.
The merger will allow both companies to improve efficiency and quality across a broader production base and to streamline parallel administrative and management functions. The combined company will be known as Mission Ranches Co. LLC and will be based in King City, CA.
Under the terms of the agreement, Sam McKinsey and Ron Harney will join Stan Pura, John Romans, David Gill and Mike Hitchcock as member-owners of the combined entity. Mr. McKinsey will continue to take a more active role in the Growers Express agricultural operations programs as well as managing elements of Mission Ranches' overall operations. Mr. Harney will oversee the company's Salinas production as well as other new production opportunities.
The merger brings together farming operations -- and their related harvesting companies -- with long histories in the Salinas Valley and surrounding areas.
"Like ours, Sam McKinsey Farms' roots are deep in this region," Mr. Pura said in a statement. "The opportunity to join our strengths with theirs is very exciting and a big step forward as we continue to expand our diverse operations."
The merger also formally combines partners who have worked together for years through a variety of affiliations.
"I have worked closely with this same group of partners in our affiliated operations, investments and growth plans for 15 years," Mr. McKinsey said in the statement. "I am looking forward to building a stronger foundation from each partner having different strengths and inputs."
The combined company's growing expertise includes conventional and organic commodities such as lettuce, Romaine, broccoli, cauliflower, green onions and mixed lettuce. The company also grows specialty items such as spring mix, spinach, bok choy, napa, endive, escarole, cilantro, kale, radishes, radicchio and brussels sprouts.
Production will be located in California in Gilroy, Watsonville, Hollister, Salinas, Gonzales, King City and Imperial, as well as in Mexico and Yuma, AZ. Mission Ranches Co. was formed in 1988 with the consolidation of the long- time family farming operations of John Romans and Stan Pura with Mesa Packing, a harvesting and packing concern owned by David Gill and Mike Hitchcock.
Sam McKinsey Farms was formed in 1980 as the successor to a farming operation with Salinas Valley roots dating back to 1948.
