Miky Suarez pleased by Mexican grape outlook
Of all the factors surrounding the Mexican grape season, most important is that it is early, in the view of Miguel (Miky) Suarez, sales manager of MAS Melons & Grapes, LLC, based in Rio Rico, AZ.
In an April 7 interview, Suarez was asked to describe the upcoming grape deal. “Number one, it is very early,” he said. “We will be ahead of schedule. Chile will finish early and Mexico will be early, so it seems it will be a long season for Mexican grapes. In my opinion, we need a long season.”
Production on Mexican green grapes will be down this spring and Suarez said he expects the market for “green grapes will be active all season.” He is unsure of how much the green grape volume will drop, but added that some estimates are “20 to 25 percent, but who knows? It will be less than a normal year.”
Suarez said the production of Mexican Flames “will be fine” this spring. “It won’t be a bumper crop, but very good volume.”
“Overall, when this happens, long seasons are good for everybody,” he continued. “No one benefits when the markets are just stuck. Situations like this are good for everybody.”
MAS Melons & Grapes ships from a part of the Hermosillo growing district “that is not the earliest, but we will also be early for the normal for us, which is May 12 or 13. This year we will start May 5, which is a week or more ahead of a normal season.”
