Midwest Best Produce to ship watermelons in early May
Midwest Best Produce, which this year has already begun shipping watermelons produced offshore, as well as shipping Mexican watermelons, is expecting to begin its Florida and Texas watermelon deals the first week of May.
Dan Pupillo Jr., president of the firm, which is based on the St. Louis Produce Market, said his Florida deal will be followed by Georgia and Missouri.
Missouri will begin about June 25 if the weather goes as expected, Pupillo added.
Midwest Best serves Midwestern customers from its St. Louis warehouse, filling-in orders for retailers within a 300-mile radius with next-morning watermelon deliveries.
The balance of the company’s North American watermelon distribution “is shipped directly from the farms.”
After a very long, cold winter in the northern and eastern United States, Pupillo said March 28, “I can feel the first break of spring and a surge in demand [for watermelons]. Everyone looks forward to spring. I expect a good run for spring and I look forward to a good business. With a break in the weather, we are set up to be positioned well for a good season. We have quality early melons. We should see good movement for the spring watermelon business.”
