On Saturday, April 1, the Produce for Better Health Foundation held its National Excellence Award Luncheon in San Francisco to announce the winners of its crystal awards, and Melissa's had the honor of being awarded the Diamond Crystal Award, the highest honor of all the PBH 2005 National Excellence Awards.
Melissa's/World Variety Produce Inc., a specialty produce distributor headquartered in Los Angeles, was honored for its multifaceted outreach efforts, including its commitment to children's nutrition education. The Melissa's team visited schools and conducted student education programs including new product sampling and school material donations. These programs reached over 200,000 young students and families with the message to "enjoy fruits and vegetables and visit the produce aisle." Thousands of families also heard the message through retail programs, local retail events and parent living-well educational seminars, product tastings, and educational programs with community children's programs.
Melissa's also offered a series of seminars to educate in- house personnel about fruit and vegetable nutrition, and promoted 5 A Day -- The Color Way and PBH at industry trade shows. Melissa's communicated the theme to live healthy by making smart nutrition and exercise decisions to hundreds and hundreds of families with this 5 A Day education program.
