Lyon artichokes back at Beachside Produce
Beachside Produce LLC, a grower-shipper located in Guadalupe, CA, is gearing up for its much-anticipated Lyon artichoke season. The Lyon artichokes are grown primarily in California’s Lompoc and Santa Maria valleys, where there is a cool microclimate to grow the European-style Lyon artichoke, which has a French heritage.
Harvest usually begins toward the end of March and continues through November. Peak production months will be April, May and June.
Beachside Produce LLC's Lyon artichokes. The Lyon variety — known for its large size, meaty leaves and a huge nutty-flavored heart — thrives in the Mediterranean-like climate of California’s central coast.
"The Lyon is a big star around here during the artichoke season," Bob Montgomery, commodity manager, said in a press release. "We routinely receive a lot of fan mail via hand-written notes and email. Consumer feedback about the Lyon artichoke has always been that it is the best-tasting and most-meaty artichoke they have ever eaten.
“I recommend ordering early as the demand for our premium Lyon artichoke almost always exceeds supply," he said.
The artichokes are packed conventionally in 12-, 15-, 18-, 24- and 30-size packs. Four-count bags and long-stem 18s are also available.
Beachside Produce’s other commodity specialties include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, mix and head lettuce, kale, cilantro and strawberries.
