Longtime salesman William P. Donnelly Sr. has died
William P. Donnelly Sr., a longtime produce salesman in Nogales, AZ, died June 3 at his home in Rio Rico, AZ, after losing a battle with skin cancer. He was 59 years old.
Born in the Bronx, NY, Mr. Donnelly got his start in the produce industry quite by chance. He moved his family from New Jersey to Tucson, AZ, in 1977 with the hopes that the change in climate would help to alleviate one of his four son's health problems. After arriving in Tucson, Mr. Donnelly opened a liquor store and worked with computers on the side, said his son William P. Donnelly Jr.
Mr. Donnelly began working with computerized payroll systems for several companies located in Nogales in the early 1980s. It was at one of those companies, Kelly Distributing, where he got his first exposure to the produce industry, said his friend Ralph Barreda.
In 1985, Mr. Donnelly landed his first produce sales position with Northcross Distributing, one of the nine sales positions he would have over the next 20 years, said Mr. Barreda. Another of those nine positions was with Mr. Barreda's own company, Barreda Marketing Inc.
"He just loved the produce business," Mr. Barreda said. "He was always the first person in the office and usually the last to leave. I couldn't beat him to my own office.
Mr. Donnelly Jr. echoed Mr. Barreda's sentiments. "I don't think he could sleep much without thinking about produce, Mr. Donnelly Jr. said. "He always wanted to represent the grower to the best of his ability and make sure that the grower got a fair deal.
While Mr. Donnelly loved the produce industry, he had a second love and that was sports of all kinds.
"I called him 'the encyclopedia' because there wasn't anything he did not know about sports, Mr. Barreda said.
An avid golfer, Mr. Donnelly was an original founding member of the "Border Shoot-Out, an annual golf tournament held in Tubac, AZ. Over the last 16 years, the tournament raised over $300,000 for the United Way of Santa Cruz County, Mr. Donnelly Jr. said.
In addition to his son William Jr., he is survived by his wife, Ginger Donnelly; three other sons, Brian J. Donnelly, Kevin T. Donnelly, and Sean M. Donnelly; and a daughter, Kerrie Donnelly Durazo.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society
