Kiwifruit sizing, quality exceptional for Zespri as 2014 advances
Michele Hoard, senior marketing manager for Zespri North America, said domestic consumers can expect to find kiwifruit of exceptional quality and size at the retail shelf in the very near future.
“The weather during the growing season has had plenty of sunshine, sufficient rainfall and good pollination,” Hoard told The Produce News in an interview. “Kiwifruit quality is great with sizing for SunGold being larger than expected and Green conventional and organic trending slightly larger than last season.”

Parent company Zespri International is located in Mount Maunganui, in the Bay of Plenty, which is the heart of New Zealand’s kiwifruit industry. The company is owned by former and current kiwifruit growers. The United States is among the company’s larger importers of kiwifruit.
North American shipments were expected to arrive in late May. “North America will have a slight increase in Green organic,” Hoard went on to say. “We will be receive more SunGold than in past seasons.”
Zespri services both the retail and wholesale markets. “Zespri has customized marketing programs for retail and wholesale accounts,” Hoard added.
Kiwifruit is a nutritional dynamo, and Hoard said consumers continue to seek out fruit and vegetables that can have a positive impact on their health.
“When consumers learn of the great nutrition kiwifruit offers, they become loyalists and make kiwifruit a regular part of their diet,” she commented.
This season, Zespri will launch a new public relations campaign. “Zespri has done extensive research into the health benefits of kiwifruit, and we will be focusing on communicating these to both the trade and the end consumers,” she said.
