Kelsi Farms to sell Double D's organics
Kelsi Farms Inc. in Visalia, CA, a produce marketing company formed about six months ago, will be handling the sales of a line of organic vegetables and melons from Double D Farms in Coalinga, CA, according to Robert Faulkner, Kelsi's founder.
The product line includes garlic, broccoli, romaine, red and green leaf lettuce, yellow and red onions, cantaloupe, honeydew, orange flesh honeydew, seedless watermelon, butternut squash, acorn squash, white sweet corn, zucchini and cucumbers. All of the products are certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers and packed in the "Double D Farms" label.
"As of yesterday, I have taken over the sales of [Double D Farms] as a grower's agent, Mr. Faulkner told The Produce News on Tuesday, April 26.
Kelsi Farms opened for business in October with an f.o.b. sales deal through the winter out of Guaymas, Mexico, crossing into the United States through Nogales, AZ. "Our primary focus this year in that program was zucchini, yellow straight neck squash, Sunburst squash and summer squash, he said. The grower also had "trials on a lot of other items, and those appeared to have been successful, so for next winter, "they are going to have steady, consistent plantings of the items they had in trials this year, he said.
The Guaymas products were packed in the "Flavorful Harvest label. For next winter, "we are talking about packing in the 'Kelsi Farm' label also, he said.
Born and raised in Salinas, CA, Mr. Faulkner grew up in the produce business. His father, now retired, was involved with farming and marketing produce his whole life, Mr. Faulkner said, adding, "I love the produce business."
Before starting Kelsi Farms, which was named after his six-year-old daughter, Mr. Faulkner had been in the business for about 20 years.
During that time, he worked for various companies including O.K. Produce in Fresno and, more recently, C.H. Robinson in Visalia.
