J&K Fresh East continues to grow very quickly
PHILADELPHIA — The ports of the Delaware River are primarily known as the major gateway for U.S. perishable imports from the Southern Hemisphere.
In starting his own customs brokerage, Lawrence (Larry) Antonucci Jr., who had 25 years of experience in the industry, recognized the opportunities in perishables. On Jan. 1, 2012, Antonucci’s new enterprise, 721 Logistics LLC, opened a new division: J&K Fresh East.
In using the J&K Fresh name, Antonucci uses the brand started in Inglewood, CA, by Lynette Keffer, the founder of J&K Fresh LLC. Antonucci credits Keffer’s West Coast operation with being the best in that business.
“I reached out to her in 2011 and asked if she was interested in bringing her brand to the East Coast,” Antonucci explained to The Produce News. “The ‘J&K Fresh’ brand is synonymous with outstanding customer service and doing what’s best for the customer.”
On Jan. 1, 2012 Antonucci was in business. By early April 2012, the organization’s staff had grown to 12, including his brother, John Antonucci, and cousin, John Ercolani III, who are now also partners in the company.
The three men were all related to the family owners of Barthco, an established Philadelphia customs house brokerage.
Ercolani, whose father was the chief financial officer of Barthco, had a dozen years of experience in customs house brokerage of perishables when he started at J&K Fresh East. Ercolani, who is vice president of operations, is also the firm’s perishables specialist.
Just two-and-a-half years later, the company has grown to 23 employees, five of whom are licensed customs brokers. In addition, under the 721 Logistics corporate brand, the company now provides customs brokerage for all commodities, as well as air and ocean transportation services.
