Jim Gorny leaving IFPA for V.P. position at United
Jim Gorny, vice president of scientific and technical affairs for the International Fresh-cut Produce Association in Alexandria, VA, will depart the association to join Washington, DC-based United Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association as vice president of quality assurance and technology. Dr. Gorny will fill the slot at United left vacant by the departure of Donna Garren, who earlier this year joined the National Restaurant Association.
"Jim is one of the most respected people in his field, and we feel lucky to have him," United President Tom Stenzel told The Produce News, adding that Dr. Gorny will remain in Davis, CA.
"He has worked from Davis for the last five years with IFPA, and we are confident that it will work well for us, Mr. Stenzel said.
Jerry Welcome, president of IFPA, said that the association wishes Dr. Gorny well. "There are not that many people out there of his caliber. United offers a bigger stage and more resources for him, and he felt that this was the best move for his career at this time.
IFPA has launched a search for Dr. Gorny's replacement, and Mr. Welcome said that there are a couple of viable candidates at this point. The association hopes to have someone in place before Dr. Gorny's July 1 departure.
Dr. Gorny, who received IFPA's 2005 Technical Award at the association's April conference and exhibition in Phoenix, earned his doctorate from UC-Davis in 1995. Prior to joining IFPA, he was senior vice president of technology at Davis Fresh Technologies in Davis.
