Grower-Shipper Association of Central California names new chairman
MONTEREY, CA -- The Grower-Shipper Association of Central California marked its 75th year in business May 12 with its annual meeting, where John Baillie was named board chairman.
Mr. Baillie of Baillie Family Farms/Tri-Counties Packing replaced the association's outgoing chairman, Kurt Gollnick of Scheid Vineyards. Mr. Baillie will be the association's chairman until 2007, when Kay Filice of Filice Farms will become the first chairwoman in the organization's history.
More than 100 Grower-Shipper members gathered at the Pasadera Country Club to hear a recap of the organization's highlights over the past year as well as a keynote address from California Secretary of State Bruce McPherson. It was announced that the Grower-Shipper Association has chosen Bill Garin of The Garin Co. as its second recipient of its E.E. (Gene) Harden Award for lifetime achievement. The late Mr. Harden was a grower in the Salinas Valley and with his wife launched the Harden Foundation to assist charitable organizations in the Salinas Valley.
A hardbound coffee table book, titled Grower-Shipper Association: Seventy-Five Years of Service, is slated for a June release. Salinas-area historian Burton Anderson authored the book.
In addition to Mr. Baillie, the association's other officer's for 2005-06 are Joe Pezzini of Ocean Mist Farms, vice chairman, and Ms. Filice, treasurer. Other board members are Richard Bascou of Dole Fresh Vegetables; Bardin Bengard of Tom Bengard Ranch; Rodney Braga of Braga Ranch; Dennis Donohue of European Vegetable Specialties; Sammy Duda of Duda California; Stephen Griffin of Misionero Vegetables; David Martella of Martella Farming Co.; James Mills of Mills Family Farms; Dominic Muzzi Jr. of Watsonville Produce; and Mr. Gollnick.
