GreenPoint anticipating expanded spring volumes
RIO RICO, AZ — The busiest time of the year is fast approaching for the produce marketing company, GreenPoint Distributing, LLC.
GreenPoint is run by brothers Octavio and Ernesto Gutiérrez, who own the 20-year old agricultural enterprise, Agricola Gutiérrez, based in Obregón, Sonora.
The brothers own GreenPoint, and are also independent in other endeavors as well.
Omar Losolla, GreenPoint’s director of sales and marketing, said GreenPoint will be marketing Ernesto Gutiérrez’ “sizable Roma tomato program” this spring. Ernesto owns extensive tomato shade houses and GreenPoint is also distributing Romas produced by other growers.
“We are also increasing our squash production — zucchini, yellow and grey — out of Hermosillo,” Losolla said. “We have also increased our hard squash program with butternut, spaghetti and acorn.”
Ernesto Gutiérrez will be shipping sweet corn until April 1. That Obregón program launched seasonal shipping in November. “We are trying to innovate on corn with new packaging to help with traceability. It’s a unique idea to band each husk with a 3/8-inch label, recipe and traceability information on a QR code.”
The band is a start in GreenPoint’s effort to develop a product identity with consumers.
Ernesto owns 2,000 acres of vegetable farms and is a partner in a major produce distributing company based in Hermosillo. The Hermosillo company sells high-quality produce to northern Mexico’s largest retail chains.
Octavio Gutiérrez has expanded into cattle ranching, gas stations and shrimp farming. To the southwest of Obregón, Octavio operates 360 acres of shrimp farms along the coast of the Gulf of California.
