Great Lakes Floral Expo educates, inspires, rewards, certifies and celebrates industry
Over 390 floral professionals attended the 2014 Great Lakes Floral Expo March 7-9 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, MI. The annual expo included seven hands-on classes, seven workshops, 14 business sessions, a book fair, a silent auction, a design contest and a Find the Daisy Contest.
It’s All About Flowers was the theme of the event and it drew growers, wholesalers, suppliers and florists from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and as far away as Manitoba, Canada. Rod Crittendon, executive vice president of the Michigan Floral Association, which sponsors the weekend, told The Produce News it was another successful event for the attendees and the MFA.
The general sessions and workshops covered an array of subjects on day-to-day floral business operations, weddings, prom designs, funeral work, social media and everyday floral designs. The All About Flowers Design Contest presented $5000 in awards and prizes in three different divisions — professional, academy and student. The design contest winners will represent the MFA at national competitions sponsored by florist and floral design groups.
The Trade Show Marketplace showcased the newest varieties of cut flowers, plants, supplies, containers and novelties. The Find the Daisy Contest had attendees scouring the trade show floor for products and daisies, with prizes being awarded to the winners.
The final night of the expo included a Recognition Banquet & Awards Ceremony that was attended by 180 professionals. Among the honorees were Tom Figueroa, vice president of Nordlie in Warren, MI, who received the 2014 Special Recognition Award for his volunteer work with the MFA; Jim Wilson from Osseo, MI, received the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award for his over 40 years of service to florists and the association; and Accent Décor in Norcross, GA, was named 2014 Supplier of the Year for its loyal support of the MFA and its commitment to various community projects both in the United States and overseas.
The evening included the induction of new members to the ranks of Certified Florist. Those becoming certified have passed testing to certify their overall knowledge of floristry and what it takes to be a successful professional florist.
Next year’s Great Lakes Floral Expo will carry the theme Floral Fantasy and will be held March 6-8, 2015, at the DeVos Center in Grand Rapids.
