Conditions have combined in a perfect-storm manner, leading to a quality pipfruit season for Giumarra Wenatchee [WA]. “Weather patterns were positive this season, aiding in producing high soluble solids and good coloring,” Sales Manager Jason Bushong said. “The conditions in New Zealand were very good this season, producing large fruit which is very favorable for the U.S. market.”
The company’s apple manifest includes Braeburn, Fuji, Granny Smith, Pink Lady and Royal Gala.

On the pear side, Giumarra moves Taylor’s Gold, Bosc, and Comice pears. “This will be the second season for us with a new pear, Angelys,” he continued. “This pear is a high Brix, creamy-fleshed pear with a very nice bronze russet.”
The company’s Green kiwi fruit volume has been declining as growers make the transition to newer strains of Gold kiwifruit “with good success. This transition was prompted in response to the PSA virus affecting most of the traditional Gold varieties,” he said. “PSA continues to watched and managed closely.”
This is the seventh season Giumarra has marketed Meyer lemons. “Meyer lemons continue to grow for us,” Bushong said. “The good growing conditions this year have produced a larger volume crop with good sizing for the U.S. We anticipate early air freight shipments by first of June with vessel arrivals hitting the first part of July.”
The variety is no longer a marketplace mystery. “Meyer lemons continue to grow with consumers as they see it more and more on menus, prompting their interest to buy in the supermarket,” Bushong stated. “Secondly, with itsown designated PLU, retailers can now segregate them on the shelf.”
Giumarra has designed a special pouch bag for its Meyer lemons that call out the variety with nutritional information and recipes.
