Frontera Produce launches melon import program
Frontera Produce, based in Edinburg, TX, announced the launch of a new melon import program into the port of Corpus Christi, to begin operations in November.
Frontera will be importing cantaloupe and honeydew from Guatemala and other Latin American sources, contracting 2,400 tons per week for the duration of the season running November to May. The product will be shipped to retailers and wholesalers throughout the United States.
"There were several factors that influenced our decision to select this port. Other Gulf ports were considered, however the port of Corpus Christi offered a strategic location with accessible rail and highway transportation, an on-dock facility and cold storage that was not only clean but food-safe a very important factor in our decision," said Will Steele, vice president and partner in Frontera. We anticipate this trial season to run very smoothly and hope to add mangos to the cantaloupes and honeydews for the 2006-07 season.
The port of Corpus Christi cold storage facilities are comprised of a state-of-the-art, 100,000-square-foot refrigerated warehouse on the Gulf Coast of Texas. The port offers enclosed temperature-controlled loading docks in a foreign trade zone. From this strategic location, the port serves domestic and international markets with excellent maritime, rail and highway connections.
Frontera Produce Ltd. is a premier source for melons, tropicals, onions and ethnic commodities. While Mexican imports remain a significant business, it also continues to expand domestically and most recently began importing from Central America and South America.
Frontera also offers consolidation, forward distribution, repacking and superior quality-control inspection on every load.
