FPFC Southern California Expo draws 1,500 to Anaheim
The Fresh Produce & Floral Council’s Southern California Expo July 15 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim drew 1,500 participants and over 200 exhibitors in 200 booths, about 40 percent representing the floral industry.
“Navigating the Future,” the show’s slogan, opened with its Keynote Awards Breakfast where Capt. Richard Phillips delivered the keynote address about his ordeal at sea after Somali pirates hijacked his ship and held him hostage for five days in 2009.
“His main takeaway was ‘you are stronger than you think you are,’ ” Carissa Mace, president of FPFC, told The Produce News.
The 2014 Floral Achievement Award was presented to Alice Grazziani, director of floral for Gelson’s Markets in Encino, CA, by Chris Robinson, the 2012 recipient of the award, from The Pinery in Escondido, CA. The winner is chosen by a panel of past recipients to recognize an individual for outstanding service and dedication to the floral industry, according Mace.
The floral design contest for supermarket chain retail clerks featured two different experience levels this year; Level A for designers with four or more years of experience, and Level B for designers with zero to three years of experience. In a race against the clock they created centerpieces in 40 minutes, with a mystery package of materials, to illustrate an announced theme.
Stater Bros. Markets, based in San Bernardino, CA, swept the Level B category, taking the top three awards with three first-time contestants. First place was awarded to Thuy Nguyen, second place to Christina Dockter, and third place to Marlene Rizzo.
The first place winner in the more experienced Level A category was Heather Rogers from Gelson’s Markets, second place went to Sarah Doney from Whole Foods, and third place to Margaret Koloski from Gelson’s Markets.
Mayflower Distributing LLC, a distributor of balloons and party supplies headquartered in Mendota Heights, MN, was awarded the Best of Show booth award in the floral category.
Mace told The Produce News that the format would stay the same for next year’s event, which will be back at the Disneyland Hotel on July 14, 2015.
