Fort Boise Produce seeing good size and quality with early onions
New-crop Spanish Sweet onions started shipping from Fort Boise Produce in Parma, ID, in the first week of August, earlier than most years, and Sales Manager Ashley Robertson said on Sept. 2 both quality and size were looking good.
“We’re confident about our size this year,” Robertson said of onions going out the door and those that would be coming into storage as harvest proceeds.
“Right now we’re running early onions, but the crop looks very good,” she said. Onions were set to go into storage starting mid-September, and Robertson said harvest will likely be completed by mid- to late October.
The family-owned-and-operated facility is Primus-certified, and all onions grown by the Farmer family farms are also certified by Certified Onions Inc. Growers are GAP-compliant, and product can be tracked to its origin. The packingshed utilizes video inspections, which allow internal inspectors or warehouse managers to take videos of product samples in real time.
With a variety of pack choices, Fort Boise provides retail with packs of two-, three-, five- and 10-pound drawstring mesh bags. One particular pack for both retail and foodservice ships under the “Pink Ribbon” brand starting in late September and running through October to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to benefit research and treatment.
While the operation ships to a large retail segment, Robertson said Fort Boise does a good amount of foodservice business.
The company ships approximately 90 percent yellow Spanish Sweet onions, and the shed utilizes line software that provides additional efficiency from storage to pack.
Joe Farmer, operations manager, said the process has reduced handling to fewer than 10 people, and in recent years roller sizers have been replaced with computer-automated equipment.
Labels shipped by the company are “Fort Boise,” “Giant Sweet,” “Gold N Sweet,” “Ida Gold,” “Golden Pride,” “Western Idaho” and the special “Pink Ribbon.”
