Florida Classic Growers excited about Southern Exposure, second half of peach and citrus season
Florida Classic Growers of Dundee, FL, is excited about the second half of its citrus season and the beginning of its increasingly popular peach deal, but just as excited about the upcoming Southeast Produce Council Southern Exposure trades how in Orlando, FL, Feb. 28 to March 1.
Florida Classic has a special connection to SPC. Vice President of Sales and Marketing Al Finch has been a member of the organization since 2003 and served as its president from 2006-08.
“It’s been really neat to see the growth of the SPC over the last 10 years. It came from humble beginnings — there were only about 100 exhibitors at the first Southern Exposure in 2004 — and now we have come to the point where we have over 260 booths and a long waiting list,” said Finch. “It’s really become the premier regional trade show in the produce industry.”
Finch said the value of the show for Florida Classic comes not only in networking but also as a great opportunity to catch up with clients and make new friends in a casual setting.
“The value of this show is incredible with the number of retail and foodservice attendees increasing each year,” Finch said. “I know our retail partners always look forward to coming to Florida each March for it.”
Personally, the show and council have even more meaning for Finch. “I’ve made friendships that will last a lifetime and had the opportunities to grow and learn as a businessman that I wouldn’t have had otherwise,” he said.
Meanwhile, Florida Classic started its Valencia orange program Feb. 12 and will have steady supplies into the summer. And demand for its tree-ripened peach crop is booming.
“We look forward to the second half of the citrus season and the start of our peach season,” Finch said. “We’re looking at a very good Valencia season with excellent eating quality, heavy on 80s and 100s, perfect for promotions in four- and five-pound bags. Valencias are our largest orange variety and will be available until June, then we will have a storage program through July.”
Red grapefruit and honey tangerines will be available through mid-March.
But demand for the growing peach deal has Florida Classic excited about the future of the program. Peach harvest will begin in mid-March with the UF Sun variety and finish in mid-May.
