KANSAS CITY — In Kansas City’s wholesale produce business, “Liberty, C&C are dominant and doing a good job,” noted Jimmy Connell, a family owner of Keith Connell, Inc. “The three of them have all the business” within the metropolitan area’s produce trade, referring to Liberty Fruit Co., Inc., in Kansas City, KS, and C&C Produce, Inc. in North Kansas City.
In the retail business, “the independents dominate here,” Connell said. Hy-Vee and Associated Wholesale Grocers, which is nationally headquartered in Kansas City, KS, dominate the retail scene. AWG serves Price Chopper and Sun Fresh stores in Kansas City. Hy-Vee is located in West Des Moines, IA.
The independent grocers have driven national chains out of the Kansas City area.
There are also big players serving Kansas City’s foodservice realm.
Keith Connell has expanded its business from the traditional Kansas City base to include “a booming business” with good produce houses in Oklahoma. Connell also brokers loads to small wholesalers around eastern Kansas.
Produce broker Dennis Finucane, the owner of F.G.F. Co., based in Overland Park, KS, also indicated he has stretched his sales area to towns several hours from Kansas City.
