California Date Commission champions dates
The California Date Commission is a non-profit organization funded by growers and packers, which supports the industry through marketing, research and government affairs.
“The commission represents all growers in the greater Coachella Valley, branded as California Dates,” said Kristy Kneiding, executive director of the California Date Commission. “California Dates are of the highest quality and the best in the marketplace for several reasons. First, as part of a Federal Marketing Order, they are under a strict set of standards to pass inspections. Secondly, year after year, the commission invests in research for pest control and food safety to ensure the stability and high quality expected from our fruit.”
Additionally, the Coachella Valley provides the most ideal climate and soil conditions for growing dates.
“Last but certainly not least, the local workforce is highly knowledgeable and skilled in growing practices and farm maintenance, which contributes greatly to the high quality that consumers have come to expect from California Dates,” Kneiding said.
The commission’s role is to build the overall dates category by educating both the trade and consumers on why California Dates are a smart, health forward choice.
“We do this through nutrition focused content, digital resources and trade communication that highlight dates as a naturally sweet and energizing whole food that aligns with today’s clean label, sugar conscious eating trends,” Kneiding said.
For retailers and shoppers, the commission offers a robust Health & Nutrition section on CaliforniaDates.com and a downloadable Health & Nutrition Guide that outline how dates fit into a balanced, health conscious lifestyle, including for consumers who are simply trying to eat cleaner, as well as those following heart healthy or diabetes friendly eating patterns.
“We support this with an extensive recipe library—developed by celebrity chefs, food influencers, registered dietitians and culinary medicine experts—that showcases California Dates in snacks, smoothies, sweet and savory recipes, and as a healthy, natural sweetener, demonstrating both versatility and flavor,” Kneiding said.
Partnerships with trusted health organizations extend that education. Recent collaborations with the American Diabetes Association and participation in the American Heart Association’s Heart Check Program help reinforce that California Dates are a nutrient rich, heart healthy whole fruit.
“Across our digital campaigns and events, we consistently tell the ‘why California’ story: clearly labeled U.S. origin, superior freshness and purity, strict food safety and quality standards and sustainably grown dates that allow North American shoppers to buy closer to home and support American farmers,” Kneiding said.
Ramadan remains a key consumption period, with dates playing an essential role at Iftar and Suhoor as a naturally sweet, energizing food. At the same time, usage has expanded well beyond Ramadan and any single cultural tradition, which is where the year round growth is coming from.
“Some of the biggest opportunities are in making dates part of everyday, seasonal storytelling,” Kneiding said. “We connect California Dates to broader clean eating and wellness trends so retailers can feature them as a go to fruit for shoppers looking to avoid refined sugar and artificial sweeteners all year long. Whether it is back to school lunchboxes, winter wellness or summer entertaining, dates can be positioned as a versatile, naturally sweet ingredient for energy bites, salads, grain bowls and simple desserts.”
The mandate of the California Date Commission is to grow the entire California Dates category through generic marketing, nutrition, field research and education that benefits all producers rather than individual brands.
“Right now, key marketing priorities include elevating awareness of California’s leadership in date production, spotlighting the Coachella Valley’s ideal growing conditions and reinforcing core attributes: naturally sweet and energizing with no added sugar or artificial sweeteners, superior freshness and purity, clearly labeled origin, strict U.S. food safety and quality standards and sustainably grown, locally sourced fruit,” Kneiding said.
Promotional efforts center on partnerships with credible health and culinary voices to tell the story of California Dates as a naturally sweet, nutrient rich “power fruit” that meets clean label expectations.
“Digital content, recipe development, media events and social campaigns all work together to demonstrate everyday versatility, while industry and consumer research help growers, retailers, and manufacturers better understand evolving preferences and product opportunities,” Kneiding said.
