Dan Sims to retire from Westlake Produce Co.
Westlake Produce Co. in Los Angeles announced the retirement of Dan Sims, one of four partners, effective June 30.
Mr. Sims' father, Joseph Sims, founded Brooks & Sims with William I. Brooks in 1962. Dan Sims and William I. Brooks son Bill ran the business from the early 1980s until its merger with Westlake-Miller in 2001, which led to the formation of Westlake-Miller/Brooks & Sims.
In 2004, the partners renamed the firm Westlake Produce Co. to accommodate changes such as a partner's retirement or other mergers in the industry. Bill Brooks continues the partnership with Dale Liefer and Jeff Miller.
A specialist in onions, dry beans and grapes, Mr. Sims said that his customers will be in the capable hands of Bill Brooks and Shawn Patrick after his departure.
Mr. Sims, 55, decided it was time to end his produce career while he had the health and energy to pursue other personal interests. They include growing Pinot Noir grapes at a vineyard owned jointly with his father in Sonoma. He also may pursue creative interests and take college courses.
Mr. Sims has been marketing fresh produce for either a family-owned business or as a business partner since his graduation with a degree in agricultural marketing from Fresno State in 1972.
"It's a wonderful business," Mr. Sims said, reflecting on his four decades in fresh produce. "But to be successful and give your customers what they deserve requires more hours in the day than I want to give at this stage of my life. I wish my partners well and know they will continue to grow in this industry.
In addition to its Los Angeles headquarters, Westlake Produce Co. has offices in Winter Haven, FL, and Exeter, CA.
