ST. LOUIS — Customized service is the key strength of Heimos Produce Co. Inc., located on the St. Louis Produce Market.
Jim Heimos, president of the firm, noted, “A lot of what we do is customized to our customer needs. We shape ourselves around market needs. That is been our niche. If I have a customer with a small store in southern Missouri who needs a certain pack or type of product, I’ll acquire the product to their specs. Whatever their needs are. Ninety-nine percent of what we do is customer service. They can buy produce anywhere. It’s the relationships you develop over the years that make you different than your competition.”
In light of consolidation of distributors on the St. Louis market, “We take on more items,” he said. Heimos provides a broad line of items to independent grocers as well as large national chains. “In the summer we cater to farm markets and all of that. And we cater to foodservice suppliers. We don’t try to give our vendor partners competition. We are committed to them and we don’t want to do that. We take care of our vendors. We sell to big [foodservice] companies and small.”
Heimos said his business is evenly split between retail and foodservice. Company trucks are used for local deliveries and hired trucks serve a customer base in a range of 250 miles to 300 miles from St. Louis.
As far as customers in the immediate St. Louis market are concerned, "We gain a few and lose a few. It averages out," he said.
The company celebrated its 101st anniversary in April.
