Colleen adds to organic production to meet demand
Colleen Strawberries Inc., based in Watsonville, CA, which also sells the Beach Street Farms deal, has increased its organic strawberry acreage this year to meet growing demand.
CBS Farms is the growing entity that produces Colleen branded strawberries, as well as several other brands.Director of Sales Bob Rigor admits 2018 was a difficult year for both organic and conventional prices because of overproduction and “there needs to be a correction.” But at the same time, he said their customer base is demanding more organic berries so they have increased their acreage. “We have to keep up with the needs of our customers. This year we are hoping for a fair price,” he said. “The market is the market but if it is down again this year, you will see people going out of business. And we don’t want to see that happen to any of our neighbors.”
He said the industry as a whole was expecting there to be fewer California acres this season but the acreage is not down as much as anticipated. With newer varieties producing greater yields, there is not the anticipation that volume will be off this year. Of course, strawberry volume is very dependent on weather conditions, which are always unknown.
Colleen Strawberries was sourcing from Central Mexico and Oxnard in January and expecting Watsonville production to join the mix in March. The company is a strawberry specialist offering both conventional and organic strawberries to its customers. On January 22, Rigor said, “we are in a demand-exceeds-supply situation on both organic and conventional fruit. We (as an industry) are oversold and we are just hoping that we can maintain this market for a while.”
He said the firm’s conventional production should pick up in February, but Colleen will not have significant volume of organic berries until at least sometime in late March.
