Ciruli Bros. enjoying expansion wave in Nogales
RIO RICO, AZ — The “Champagne” brand Ataulfo mangos shipped by Ciruli Bros. LL, from Chiapas, Mexico, were coming into the market in mid- to late February, putting the fruit ahead of the previous year, according to Chris Ciruli, chief operating officer of the family business, based here.
“We have better sets than last year,” Ciruli said.
“ ‘Champagne’ is our signature item. It’s a great-eating piece of fruit. When we started in the late 1990s, it was a Hispanic and Asian item. By 2014 we have captured a tremendous part of the Caucasian market.” He said retailers will be promoting “Champagne” mangos from March through May.
Among other items, Ciruli handles Roma and vine-ripe tomatoes, green and colored bell peppers, green beans, eggplant, hot peppers and squashes. Ciruli said his firm started a California program last year with similar dry vegetables. Ciruli also ships California onions.
“We try to stay stable but every year we pick up a farmer and add something else” to the corporate produce mix, he said. This is driven in part because “the farmers want to diversify.”
Ciruli said that he expects the Nogales deal will continue to increase volume at the rate of 6 percent to 10 percent per year indefinitely. This is driven by increasingly healthy eating trends in the United States, as well as a robust environment for Mexican agriculture, he said.
