Cherie C. Watte named new chair at CA GROWN
Cherie C. Watte, executive director of the California Asparagus Commission, is the new chair at CA GROWN, a partnership between the California Department of Food & Agriculture and commodity groups representing the state’s agriculture industry. Watte follows former chair Kasey Cronquist, chief executive officer and ambassador for the California fresh-cut flower industry, who guided CA GROWN through a newly revamped promotions program and membership expansion.
“We are thrilled to have Cherie at the helm of the CA GROWN board,” Nick Matteis, executive director of CA Grown, said in a press release. “She knows firsthand what it takes to be an active farmer in California, since she is the fourth generation of her family to farm in the Imperial Valley. “Cherie has held numerous leadership roles in the agriculture community and is well suited to lead this group of organizations and companies.”
Before she became executive director of the California Asparagus Commission, Watte worked for the CDFA as the director of international trade policy and was appointed manager of the agricultural export program by Gov. Pete Wilson.
“It’s an exciting time for CA GROWN and I am happy to help lead the group into the newly invigorated campaign,” Watte said in the press release. “We have a lot going on with consumer promotions and newly formed retail and foodservice partnerships. Farmers and ranchers in California face many challenges, and this program is a bright spot for them.”
Also serving on the executive committee of the CA GROWN board are Spencer Halsey, associate director of the California Association of Gardens & Nurseries, as vice chair, and Karla Stockli, CEO of the California Fig Advisory Board, as secretary-treasurer.
“Our board is filled with champions for California agriculture,” Matteis said. “We greatly appreciate the passion that each member brings to the table.”
